Oh, Galveston

So I’ve been waiting for that one interview experience that totally sucks, mostly because I’ve always heard horror stories about interview experiences but had not yet experienced anything like that before. After this afternoon, I think it’s safe to say that I can check “weird interview experience” off my list.

So what’s the first thing I do when getting into Galveston the night before the interview? Nick my hand pretty badly with my razor blade as I was shaving. It didn’t stop bleeding profusely until 10 minutes later. (It was a pretty gross sight too, and now I have 2 distinct red lines going down the side of my thumb.)

What’s the second embarrassing thing I did? I had a total klutz attack outside of the parking garage on my way to the auditorium where all the interviewees were supposed to gather. Aforementioned klutz attack happened in front of an audience of about 3 or 4 other interviewees. So. Embarrassing.

I fell on my ass and proceeded to tear my pantyhose; luckily for me, it was at my toes. Apparently my toes are razor sharp because I happened to scrape my knees as gravity proceeded to own me, but I had no runs in my pantyhose in that area. I was mainly mortified because PANTYHOSE IS SO EXPENSIVE. Seriously, why does pantyhose cost so much? $5.60 for a pair of pantyhose? Really?? I also happened to forget my spare pair in the trunk of my car, so for the rest of the day I was pretty much checking to see if the run in my pantyhose had gone any farther up my leg than at my toes. Lovely.

The day then proceeded normally until I got to my second interview — I was grilled on the meaning of hope and how it applies to medicine. Hope and how you’re not supposed to give it if it’s not based in truth. But then how can you prove the truth? How do you give hope to a dying person? Are you giving them false hope? Are you lying? Why does the medical profession not commonly talk about hope? Hope? Hope? Hope!?!

Breakfast and lunch were delish though. Free food always makes me happy.

    GOOD LUCK , I HOPE YOU GET ACCEPTED!

    I’ve met the Admissions faculty at UTMB because I’ve spent two summers there and they are friendly and very approachable!

    Sorry to hear about the awkward/weird interview experience, though.

    @Kristine:

    Thanks! UTMB’s my first choice right now with all that I would choose from. I really like the chill atmosphere — high board scores are always a plus too :)

    High board scores are definitely a good thing! :-)

    I hope you get the acceptance letters from all the schools you’ve interviewed to.

    Your klutz attack is like the story of my life everyday, so I feel your pain. ^^; I’ve gotten used forcing myself to laugh it off everytime, otherwise I’d go crazy from embarrassment.

    The med school application process is so different from law school. It’s really interesting to hear about. And Hope?? Really?? ಠ_ಠ

    @Ava:

    Haha no worries — my klutz attacks aren’t uncommon either :p
